City of St. Joseph Shoreline Softening Management Plan

Restoring and replacing a failing shoreline.

Edgewater Resources conducted a coastal assessment along the shoreline south of the St. Joseph Harbor jetty to develop sustainable erosion control strategies. Emphasizing Engineering with Nature solutions, such as living shorelines, beach nourishment, and offshore structures, the study analyzed over 40 years of wave, wind, and lake level data, sediment sampling, and modeling data. It identified vulnerable areas and recommended a preferred approach using offshore breakwaters and a southern groyne to retain sand, reduce sediment transport, and promote sustainable shoreline growth. The feasibility of dredge mining offshore lakebed materials for nourishment also showed promise.

The project aimed to soften hardened shorelines, improve habitat, maintain public access, and reduce long-term maintenance costs. These recommendations support future shoreline development and climate resilience for the City of St. Joseph, building on prior local studies.
