Blaine Harbor Expansion

Maximizing water space and economic return.

Blaine Harbor, a commercial fishing and recreational marina, has limited development opportunities due to the environmental sensitivity of the area. Edgewater staff planned a harbor expansion that included new dockage, dredging, and on-and-offsite environmental mitigation, while incorporating revenue-producing and cost-minimizing elements. New and existing commercial and recreational dockage was configured, and a plan was made to integrate boathouses into the dockage scheme. New slip-length mixes were formulated to maximize water space and economic return, as well as excavate intertidal, inner harbor shoreline.

The design hinged, as predicted, with permit approval; therefore, the design was reverse-engineered to maximize permit-enhancing properties. The basin dredge plan was configured to maximize the biological “edges”. A dredge disposal island was configured to mimic adjacent habitat areas, incorporating fine-grained dredge spoil. Submerged dikes were constructed to allow the island to be built in lifts, confining the spoil material plume.
